IA-32
(Intel Architecture-32) The architecture of the Intel 80386, 80486, and Pentium microprocessors, used on the majority of the computers in existence today.

IA-64
(Intel Architecture-64) The architecture of the 64 bit Intel microprocessors, such as the Itanium, that are intended to be the successor to the Pentium family(IA-32).

IC
Abbreviation for "in character," used in role playing games and the like to indicate a return to the imaginary situation after an out of character(OOC) conversation.

ICANN (Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers)
A nonprofit corporation established in 1998 to oversee the assignment of Internet domain names and addresses.

ICE (Intrusion Countermeasure Electronics or IC)
In the computer underground (CU) "ice" is a fictional form of anti-cracker countermeasure, often depicted as a wall of ice.

Icebreaker
A software program that cracks corporate firewalls.

ICON
A small picture on a computer screen that represents a particular object, operation, or group of files.

iconify
To turn a window into an icon.

ICQ ("short for "I seek you.")
A widely used Internet chat program distributed free of charge from ICQ which also gives an index of users and topics.

ICRA (Internet Content Rating Association)

An organization that promotes voluntary labeling of the content of web pages so that filter software can prevent access to objectionable sites.

id
A UNIX command that identifies the user account executing the command--often an early command that crackers will run on the system when cracking remotely.

IDE (Integrated Development Environment)
A software package for editing and compiling programs and often, designing the program's windows graphically.

Identd/auth
A service on Unix that can be used to identify a TCP connection owner.

identifier
A symbolic name used in a program and defined by the programmer.

identity
In a mail-reading program, a setting that determines which of several indivduals is using the computer.

identity theft
The crime of impersonation, using forged documents of various kinds. It is an attempt to assume a person's entire identity.

ideogram
A written symbol that represents an idea rather than the pronunciation of a word.

IE
Abbreviation for Internet Explorer.

IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)
An organization that sets numerous standards for the electronics industry.

IEC power connector
The type of connector commonly used to attach a PC's power cord to the computer, using three prongs oriented in the same direction.
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)

IEEE 802.11
A set of specifications for wireless networking that give performance similar to 10base-T or 100base-T and implement Wi-Fi product compatibility standards.

IEEE 1284
An IEEE standard for PC parallel ports, compatible with the designs used previously, but including provision for high performance bidirectional communication with tape drives, disk drives, and other devices, not just printers.

IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force)
An international group of network professionals who work on advances in Internet architecture and work to ensure smooth operation on the Internet.

if
A key word in many programming languages that specifies that different actions are to be performed depending on the result of some test.

ignore list
A list of users you have blocked in a chat or instant messaging program.

A protocol that extends TCP/IP by adding CORBA defined messages for objects to connect to each other over the network.

IIRC
Online abbreviation for "if I remember correctly."

IIS (Internet Information Services)
The component of Microsoft Windows (professional and server editions only) that enables the computer to work as a web, FTP, and e-mail server.

illegal operation
An operational that a program is not permitted to perform, such as writing on a read-only disk or using memory allocated to some other program.

ILOVEYOU virus
Malware which hit computers in the year 2000. It was sent as an email message with the text "ILOVEYOU"

IM
Abbreviation for instant message.

iMAC
A line of Apple MacIntosh computers with a distinctive steamlined design introduced in 1998.

image
1. A picture represented in a computer's memory.
2. A copy, on a disk, of the contents on a computer's memory.

image map
A web page graphic to whic multiple LINKS have been assigned.

image processing
The use of a computer to modify pictures.
imagesetter
A high quality output device.

IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol)
A protocol for viewing email on a personal comuter while leaving it in place on the host system.

IMG
Tag used in HTML to represent an image file.

IMHO
Online abbreviation for In My Humble Opinion.

impact printer
A printer that prints on paper by impacting a cloth ribbon coated with ink, thus transferring ink to paper.

impedance
A measure of how easily an alternating current can pass through an electrical circuit.

import
To load a file from a format other than the application program's native format.

incremental backup
A backup operation that only copies files that have changed sinced the last backup.

incremental compiler
A compiler that compiles the lines of a program as they are typed into a computer, whether than compiling the whole computer at once.

indecency
Material that offends ordinary people but does not meet the legal criterion of obscenity.

indent
To leave a space at the beginning of the first line of a paragraph.

index
1. An alphabetical listing of important words and concepts found in a book and the pages on which these terms may be found.
2. A pictograph of a pointing hand.
3. The number that picks out an element of an array.

indexed file
A file in which the order of the items is recorded in a seperate file called the index.

Inetd
A UNIX daemon software program that responds to connection requests on a defined list of ports and then starts the executable program to deliver the services associated with those ports. This software program is sometimes known as "netd"." Inetd is a frequent target of crack attacks because of its capability to launch arbitrary programs listed in its configuration files under any desired user account, including root.

infection
A description for a computer system or a program that is said to be infected with a virus or worm.

inference engine
The part of an expert system that draws conclusions by reasoning logically from information.

inferior character
A subscript.

INF file
A type of file, with extension .inf that tells the Windows Setup program how to install a particular piece of hardware or software.

.info
A suffix for a web or email address.
